• Windows Updates and Patch Management
  • Determine if and how often Windows is receiving the latest updates and security patches.
  • Review the policies and procedures currently in place to manage updates and patches.

   

• Check Antivirus and Update Definitions
  • Make sure that Antivirus Software is running and has the latest virus definitions installed.
  • If needed, run a full system scan and create an automatic schedule for future scans.

   

• Check Spyware software and Update Definitions
  • Check System for Spyware and Remove any that is found.
  • Update or Install Anti-Spyware software on the computer system.

   

• Software Version Control
  • Check organization’s commonly used programs to make sure they are up-to-date.

   

• Check Users and Passwords and remove old system logins
  • Remove users that are no longer with the organization to prevent unwanted access.
  • Review Password Usage and Assignment Policy.

   

• Check Hard Drive Status and Defragment if needed
  • Remove from hard drives files no longer needed or wanted; these can impair performance.
  • When needed, Defragment the hard drive; making the system run more efficiently.

   

• Review Backup Procedures and Make Sure Systems are being Backed Up
  • Check that reliable backup and recovery procedures are in place and working correctly.
  • Determine if critical or sensitive data is protected and copies are kept off-site.

A typical System Security Sweep usually takes between 1 and 4 hours for the first system and 1 to 2 hours for each additional system. Servers will commonly require some additional time.
